Generally, coffee is grown from 800 to 1600 msl in Nepal. Coffee is grown by small holders in mid hill areas. However, there are some big producer who have leased land from government for coffee farming. Nepalese coffee belongs to the arabica speciality category. The wet and semi-wet processing techniques are  popular among farmers. At present, Nepal exports green bean coffee to Japan, USA, and Some EU country. Organic farming

I n Nepal, agriculture in mid and high hill is organic by default. I would prefer to term it a natural agricultural product rather than organic agricultural product. Organic needs an artificial human interferences to make it organic in real sense. While natural agriculture is totally tuned with nature. It is a outcome of natural opportunity and constraints of that specific location without artificial human interferences. Following is a documentary on organic farming in Nepal.

Land productivity

Its always a matter of choice among lots of technological options in agriculture. The "right choice should help boost production to its maximum extent. The choice is broadly between biological vs physical technology. Generally argued, physical technology like machineries are the appropriate one for land abundant country like America while vice versa is true for the land scarce country like Nepal.This gives the importance of research priority at country level. Nepal should focus on biological technology to enhance the productive capability. The emphasis on increasing labor productivity is relatively not an appropriate option. Agricultural growth in Nepal is hardly able to meet the ever increasing population growth. small drip irrigation These are the feasible technologies for small farmers in mid hill areas where water scarcity is one of the bottlenecks in farming business. It does not require big investment. Only 1500-2000 NRs is sufficient to buy drip irrigation.

Rural agricultural marketing

So, small farmers may not able to harness the opportunity of market access due to diseconomies in transportation. Two options- 1. Create collection center/ marketing cooperatives at rural areas and connect to the big market center 2. Create weekly market (haat bazar)

Agricultural development in low income countries

It is widely acclaimed that agriculture is a strategic option to tackle poverty in  the low income countries.  Agricultural productivity depends on mainly two sources- first is the input intensification and the second is the total factor productivity . Factor productivity also depends on the efficiency change and technological change. Input intensification- do low income countries able to increase the input  use so that it will play a significant role in the production increment? problem---- 1. LIC has to import major inputs like fertilizer, machines and others 2. Poor farmers in LIC may not be able to invest on such input 3. Inputs can be intensified only in the potential production area. It is entirely not appropriate to assume that input use will be increased in the area where basic social infrastructures are inadequate.
